Interim Crit 1

Panel: Dr Zaky Fakri

Comments from Panel

  • To consider privacy and security of design and possible fencing around the site.

  • To further develop the scheme and village design concept

  • To check on the arrangement of spaces within the building – private and public spaces

  • To improve on contextual design response

Response

After some consideration, the decision was made to maintain the ground floor as an open space for the public without fencing as the building is intended for the surrounding community and neighbouring school. Instead, privacy is implemented through arrangement of spaces, placing private spaces on higher floors. Regarding design scheme and concept, further research was done on the concept of village and the interpretation of the village according to psychology of space, Subsequently, research on psychology of space informed the arrangement of private and public spaces within the building. The surrounding context was further analysed to generate suitable design response.

Interim Crit 2

Comments from Panels

Programs

  • Further elaborate on the term ‘lifelong learning center’

    • Currently program is not detailed enough

    • identify 3 to 5 activities that can be done as programme for elderly and the spaces would be determined

  • Need to fully understand the subject of the elderly

    • Do more case studies on theory of elderly

Presentation Style

  • Presentation style is very pragmatic, should be more of a vision

    • need to be clear on why your design/approach is better than others

Design

  • Design boundary to be a garden that links the area around the site

    • spice garden next to school

    • circuit area for walking and exercising by elderly

    • resting areas for elderly

  • Design can be further improved

    • Go to the next level of design by using terms such as axis, nodes, etc to add design value

    • Swimming pool can be used for aqua-therapy as well as swimming

Response

The biggest issue that needs to be addressed is the further research and detailed studies on elderly and programmes for elderly. The current programmes and spaces provided in the building need to be analysed and revaluated in order to carry out the necessary improvements.  Also, need to improve presentation style and approach. In future, need to carefully plan the presentation and flow in order to convince the panels of the design intention. Relevant design input from panels can be implemented.

Comments from Panels

Site

  • Explain how the elderly will access the site whether by public transport, by car or by walking.

Presentation Style

  • No need to present all the information on the board as when presenting too much info the panel will get lost.

  • Instead, have a clear direction when presenting to clearly convey the message.

Design

  • Further develop the design and consider how to give a resort-like feel for the comfort of the elderly.

Drawings

  • Keep plan drawings clean and simple such that can be easily read.

Response

As this is the final crit before final presentation, the comments are helpful in highlighting the points that need to be corrected before final. As of such, all comments are taken into account in developing the final scheme and preparing for the final presentation.
